A Study of the Orientation of Immigrant Women by Marriage toward Work
Sung Hyang-sook

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to further the understandings of lives of immigrant women by marriage through investigating the content and meaning of their orientation toward work and putting them into patterns. The subjects were 15 immigrant women by marriage-5 Vietnamese, 2 Philippine, 3 Japanese, 1 Peruvian, 1 Chinese, and 1 Korean Chinese, 1 Indonesian - and 9 out of them worked full time and the rest, 6, worked part time. This study was conducted from January to Jun in 2012, and the data were analyzed with grounded theory, which is a proper qualitative tool to put into patterns. The results revealed 4 different types with regard to the orientation of work for those women, which were a ``work for living,`` a ``work for a substitute for their dream fulfillment, a ``work for family happiness,`` and a ``work for self extension``: 1) for those who worked for living, the purpose of their work was to meet the basic financial needs of the family; 2) for those whose job meant a substitute for their own dream fulfillment, the meaning of the work was to accomplish their own ambition through the success of their children; 3) those who worked for family happiness considered working as one of their efforts to pursue the happiness of their family, centered on themselves and their children; and 4) those who worked for self extension sought for realization of themselves through their own work, beyond family happiness. The discussion section of this study included the descriptions of the characteristics of each of these four patterns by means of cross-comparison and also stated that the current governmental support for immigrant women by marriage does not align with the meaning and purpose that those women are pursuing through their own job. Finally, it was suggested that the government should develop more substantial support policies and services according to these four different patterns, indicated in this study.
